Marine Science Program
The Marine Science Magnet Program at New River Middle School provides a unique opportunity for students to dive into the spectacular world of marine science! Students learn about ocean studies, marine biology, conservation, and technology. We work towards the development of a stewardship mindset while encouraging students to find the areas of marine science that intersect with their other interests. Our program provides diverse marine science learning opportunities through hands-on lessons and field experiences.
Program Offers
Students involved in the marine science program have the opportunity to participate in hands-on learning through engaging classroom lessons, in-house field experiences, off-campus field trips, and guest speakers on a variety of ocean-related topics. In addition to school-based marine science coursework, immersion in local marine habitats through field experiences fosters the development of a stewardship connection with our local marine habitats.
Supplementary classes to the core marine science classes include electives from the following iCAN academies:
-
Marine & Biomedical Sciences Academy
-
Engineering & Design Academy
Related elective courses included Marine Science 6th, 7th, and (a High School credit) 8th grade. Ocean Exploration, Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) and Marine Engineering are complementary electives.
